The Shakers are having a moment. The American religious sect known for their hard work ethic and sturdy furniture is the subject of a critically acclaimed film, The Testament of Ann Lee, as well as a traveling museum survey. The group’s numbers could hardly be fewer: There are just three living members of the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, who practice celibacy. Yet their influence is outsized.
