The idea of uncontrollable passion dominated the culture of courtly love in the later Middle Ages (c1150-1500). Romances and art alike depict lovers in thrall to, or wounded by, the classical God of Love. It was also during this period that the concept of romantic heterosexual love took centre stage. In earlier medieval texts, especially epics such as Beowulf (700-1000) or the 11th-century Song of Roland, the brotherly relationships between men (loving, but non-sexual, and forged on the battlefield) are far more important. The rise of romance was part of an increased focus on the power of heterosexual love.
