Americans are used to these small favours to small merchants. When asked to pay cash, we offer our condolences and hand over the few bills we still carry to get around a system we are unable, collectively, to fix. Small payments in the US are either expensive or inconvenient, because Americans keep deciding that it cannot possibly be appropriate for the federal government or the Fed to make payments both cheap and easy.
