It is easy to see why a senior politician judged on their appearance jumps at the chance of free suits, or Taylor Swift concert tickets to treat the family they barely see. But the sight of new leaders — people who had made the restoration of standards after the Boris Johnson era a central pitch — rather too visibly enjoying the perks of the job has done far more damage than the loss of the odd unknown minister. It fosters the cynical view that all politicians are the same.
