We see a similar dynamic mirrored in empirical research, such as the field experiment documented in a 2015Research Policypaperby Kevin Boudreau and Karim Lakhani. They found that when computational biologists were given frictionless access to each other’s intermediate solutions, effort shifted toward refining existing approaches at the expense of independent experimentation. The search space narrowed, consistent with the productivity trap our model predicts.
